Craig: Demoted, Not Booted
Corrected in the post below, but the Politico's Mike Allen has this from a GOP official, explaining the technicalities of stripping Craig of his committee assignments completely:
“Taking his committee assignments, in absence of a felony, would require a vote by the Conference followed by Senate passage of a new committee organization resolution. So, no, leadership can't remove him, but the Conference and Senate can. Logistically speaking, the resolution would name the members of the committees, including the members filling the vacated slots. So it would be a vote to put people on committees, not (technically, at least) a vote to remove anyone. But it literally takes an act of Congress. Remember, leadership asked him to give up his ranking member slots, and he agreed to do so. The referral to the Ethics Committee is still live, too.”
I believe it's Mickey Kaus who observed yesterday, Larry Craig is the only Republican who isn't planning on leaving the Senate.
