The Hunt for Fred October

The New York Times documents Fred Thompson's first visit to Iowa. It sounds like people are excited but confused:

“I'm a big fan, and I heard he was here — I was like, ‘Oh, my gosh!' ” said Melanie Reichwald, a graduate student from Iowa City, who was among a throng of cheerful onlookers. “I like his performances. But I probably won't vote for him, because I'm a Democrat.”

“Look, it's Rudy Giuliani,” a woman told her small son. Someone else interrupted: “No, it's not. It's the guy from ‘The Hunt for Red October.' ”

John Moeller, a retired factory worker from Davenport, said he would probably vote for Mr. Thompson.

“It seems like he's down to earth,” Mr. Moeller said, though adding, “I could be wrong.”
